Met bijna 60% van alle stemmen gekozen tot Speler van de Maand november. De Australische Nederlander, Josh Duinker. Met een gemiddelde van 15.1 punt en 9.4 rebounds over de maand november. Daarmee staat Duinker in de top van de scorers in de DBL en zelfs nummer 1 in het rebound overzicht! Een meer dan terechte keuze weer van de Leidse supporters.



TOEVAL BESTAAT NIET

Joshua Duinker is een religieus mens, dat lijkt me algemeen bekend. Voor hem bestaat er geen toeval maar heeft een hogere macht overal de hand in en ook een bedoeling mee. Je kan er sceptisch over zijn, maar luister naar de ervaringen van onze sympathieke Australiër.

In de tijd dat hij voor Spiders speelde, het basketballteam van de universiteit van Richmond in Virginia, merkte hij dat diverse spelers met regelmaat in de bijbel zaten te lezen. Tot op dat moment een onbekend boek voor Josh. Hij raakte bevriend met een collega basketballer die hem zeg maar Het Licht deed zien. Deze collega basketballer heet David Gonzalvez en speelt nu voor de Shoeters uit Den Bosch. Toeval natuurlijk.

Toen hij speelde voor Cacares Ciudad Baloncesco in Spanje las hij eens een artikel op internet. Over de bijbel, jawel. Hij besloot erop te reageren. Daarop volgde een uitgebreide reactie van een voor hem onbekende afzender van ergens in de wereld die hem zeer aansprak en bemoedigde. Het bericht was van Mike Schachtner. Toen hij hier kort speelde kwam in een gesprek met diezelfde Mike Schachtner dat artikel kwam ter sprake. Het was voor hen beiden een wonderbaarlijk toeval dat zij nu in een team speelden

Toen hij hoorde dat er in Amsterdam een kerk zat waar hij zich verwant mee voelde bleek de dominee een Aussie te zijn. Voor Duinker geen toeval meer.

Sydney wordt gezien als een der mooiste steden ter wereld. Josh had het geluk daar op te groeien. Vlakbij de schitterende stranden nog wel. Vooral in de kersttijd een heerlijke tijd om te vertoeven. Zeg maar zo ongeveer het tegenovergestelde van onze stranden. Ok, toegegeven, het wil op nieuwjaarsdag nog wel eens druk zijn bij de pier met malloten met Unoxmutsen op hun hoofd, maar voor mijn gevoel is dat toch anders. Pa was een Amsterdammer en ma een Kiwi (een Nieuw-Zeelandse dus). Samen met z’n twee zusjes hadden ze het reuze gezellig in het land van de kangoeroes. Australiërs zijn sportgek en Josh was er een van. Hij kon een aardig balletje trappen in de zaal ook. Op zijn dertiende werd hij met zijn team zaalvoetbalkampioen van Australië. Dat kunnen niet veel Devils zeggen. Als jochie was hij fan van een Nederlandse club. Omdat uw verslaggever objectief moet zijn zal hij de naam niet noemen, maar het bij wat hints laten. Ze spelen in Amsterdam in de Arena en het is met voorsprong de leukste en beste club van ons land.

Toen de jonge Duinker maar door bleef groeien koos hij, ook niet zonder succes, voor ons spel basketball. Hij belandde later zoals gemeld in Virginia waar hij bij The Richmond Spiders ging spelen Een naam die Josh ook niet nader kan verklaren. The Bulls, Grizzlies, Dragons, Giants etc, maar Spiders? Het zal vermoedelijk geen rol hebben gespeeld bij zijn vertrek naar Cacares, een club spelend in de tweede divisie van Spanje. Daar spelen heel veel oud-eredivisiespelers die nog even fanatiek zijn als in de tijd dat ze in de hoogste divisie uitkwamen. De Spaanse competitie wordt zeer hoog aangeslagen, dus je kunt je voorstellen dat het erg goed was voor de ontwikkeling van Josh. Daar plukt ZZ nu de vruchten van: wedstrijden waar iemand er 37 of 27 ingooit zien we niet veel.

Deze zomer werd Duinker opgenomen in het Nederlandse team en hij wist dat hij voor daarna voor ZZ zou gaan spelen. Het publiek in de Vijfmeihal maakte hem duidelijk, tijdens en na  de wedstrijd tegen Portugal, dat hij de juiste keus had gemaakt. Vooral het “Josh, die is een Leidenaar” raakte hem in zijn hart. Nog steeds krijgt hij kippenvel als het publiek op de banken staat en als hij na afloop door de kantine loopt. Mooi om te horen toch?

Favoriete eten: de Mexicaanse keuken. (de liefhebber ziet onmiddellijk taco’s, burrito’s en quesidilla’s; ik ook dus. Goede keus Josh!)

Favoriete basketballspeler: Kevin Durant, topscorer in de NBA van 2010 en 2011.

Hobby’s: gitaar spelen. Soms samen met Mike die ook zeer verdienstelijk gitaar speelt. Ja, hij drumt ook, maar als op zijn drums zit te beuken valt er voor mijn akoestische gitaar weinig eer te behalen.

Een laatste woord: ik ben in een warm en veilig nest beland. De mensen zijn open en vriendelijk en de fans uniek en weergaloos: alle puzzelstukjes zijn op hun plaats gevallen en ik vind dat geen toeval.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS COINCIDENCE

Josh Duinker is a religious man, a well-known fact I suppose. For him there is no such thing as coincidence, but a higher power steers our lives. One might be sceptical, but read the experiences of our sympathetic Australian and judge for yourselves.

During the time he was playing  for the Spiders, the basketball team of the Richmond University in Virginia, he noticed several players reading the Bible in their spare time. Until then, the Bible was not yet discovered by Josh. He became friends with one of the Bible readers and that person introduced him to God. From that moment on God would play a central role in Josh’s life. The friend is David Gonzalves, now playing for the Shoeters in Den Bosch. A coincidence one might think

When he played for Cacares Ciudad Baloncesco in Spain he once read an article on the internet. Yes, a religious article. He decided to react to the article. An writer from somewhere in the world sent him a response that was both encouraging and striking. The respondent was a cetain Mike Schachtner. Shortly after he started to play for Leiden he came to talk about this article with the same Mike Schachtner. They agreed it was a more than remarkable coincidence, both playing for the same team now

When he heard Amsterdam boasted  a familiar church he went there and met with the pastor. An Aussie. Once more it was no coincidence in Duinker's eyes.

Sydney is supposed to be one of the world's most beautiful cities. Josh considers himself lucky to have grown up there. The beautiful beach nearby was a great place to be, especially during Christmas time. In fact quite the opposite of our beaches during the holidays. Agreed, it might be crowded on New Year’s day in Scheveningen, when thousands of morons with woollen Unox caps run into the freezing water, but I feel that is a tad different.  Duinker's dad comes from Amsterdam and his mother is a kiwi.  Josh and his two sisters had a wonderful time growing up in Sydney. Aussies are sport-minded and Josh was one of them. It appeared he could play futsal very well and when he was thirteen his team became the Australian indoor football champion. Few Dutch can boast on that. When he was just a kid he was a big fan of a Dutch football team. I value objectivity highly so I will not mention the name of the club. A few hints then: they play in the Amsterdam Arena and it's  Holland’s best team by far.  

The young Duinker kept on growing and he opted, successfully,  for basketball. As said before he played for The Richmond Spiders in Virginia USA. The origin of this peculiar name is obscure even to Josh. The Bears, Bulls, Dragons or Giants, but Spiders?!? In for a new challenge he went to Spain to play ball for Cacares. Yes, they play in the second division, but please, do not underestimate the level. A lot of former first division players play in the second division and they did not lose the will to win. The Spanish first division is one of Europe’s best. An excellent stage to develop Josh's skills. ZZ profits from that now by having a player who scores 27 or even 37 points in some games.

Last summer Josh Duinker played for the Dutch national team for the first time. “I had already made my decision to sign with ZZ Leiden before the Portugal game.That’s why the crowd was welcoming me so well. That was the first time I felt at home from the crowd and knew I made the right decision.”

He is still deeply moved when the supporters go wild and when he is welcomed in the canteen afterwards. A ZZ Devil is too modest to feel proud, but still ….

Hobbies: playing the guitar. Sometimes together with Mike who is quite good at playing the guitar. He plays the drums as well. But Josh’s  acoustic guitar and a man of 2.07 m hammering on his drums don’t go well together 

A last word for Josh: “I feel safe and sound here. People are open and friendly and the fans unique and awesome. To me it is no coincidence I am here: it was  meant to be.”
